Thousands are injured and left without homes, millions of dollars of damage done, and approximately 330 killed. Mancora, though untouched by the earthquake, is temporarily under threat of a tsunami which thankfully does not materialize. December 2006-February 2007 - PaM plans and organizes a Disaster Planning Project to adress the ongoing danger of flooding and mudslides, as public water infrastructure and public health problems. PaM is pleased to welcome a new team of volunteers to Máncora who will be focusing on a Disaster Preparedness and Response project for the community. Forecasts are predicting heavy rains and an El Niño year, which in the past have caused major flooding, mudslides and disease outbreaks in Máncora and the surrounding area. While we were relieved that this did not happen this year, PaM is taking steps to prepare for such an emergency, and is working with the community and a team of international disaster planning volunteers to create a plan for the future.
